About us..

Sundown Swing was formed in 2011 by a group of friends who were all experienced musicians having previously played in concert bands, brass bands and amateur orchestras. Over the last 13  years the band has gradually increased in size  and through the enthusiasm and dedication of its members has now achieved a full big band line up.
The band has become very popular in their home town of Huddersfield and throughout West Yorkshire and also has achieved great success in their trips to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and to Spain's Costa Blanca.

Performing

We perform 1920s to 1970s music including the wonderful composers of the 1930s such as Gershwin and Cole Porter and of course favourites from the fantastic 1940s, especially including hits from Glenn Miller and other famous artists such as Count Basie and Benny Goodman. Although the accent is on swing music we also include latin, waltzes and bossa novas to add variety to our programmes.
We are happy to perform at any function, large or small. If you would like to book us please fill out the contact us form and our secretary will respond to you shortly.

UK tours

The highlight of 2023 was a return visit to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where we performed 3 concerts to very appreciative audiences at the wonderful venue, St Andrew's and St George's West. Prior to that we appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 3 successive years  from 2014 to 2016 when we played at St Giles' Cathedral on Edinburgh's Royal Mile, St. Vincent's Chapel and St. Marks Unitarian Church, adjacent to Edinburgh Castle.

In May 2019 we were privileged to perform at St Catherine's Church, Burbage, Leicestershire as part of their Music Festival.
The church was filled with the sounds of Miller, Gershwin and other swing favourites and an appreciative audience joined in with enthusiastic dancing.

International tours

Our first international tour was in September 2017 when we had a fabulous trip to Spain's Costa Blanca where we performed three concerts ending with a wonderful evening performing in the historic centre of Alcalali.  In June 2019 we returned to the Costa Blanca and were delighted to be able to  perform a concert to support local charity Jalon Valley Help. We were also given a very warm welcome at El Cid bar/restaurant at Benidoleig in the beautiful Jalon Valley.
The highlight of our trip was a joint concert with Calpe based band Xaranga La Xarlota in the magnificent Casa de Cultura in Calpe. This enthusiastic band made up mostly of young people played magnificently and the concert came to a rousing finale with both bands joining forces to play "Happy" and "In The Mood".
